Tempeans in L.A.

Over the extended July 4th weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting Mom and Thurman. I'm sure being in L.A. was a nice break for them, as the current daily high temperature in Tempe, Arizona is about 110 degrees, as compared to about 80 degrees here. Entertaning out-of-towners is a nice break for me too, since I get to take people to the many unique, unusual (sometimes touristy) places we Angelenos take for granted.

On Sunday we had an early meal at House of Pies and climbed Olive Hill to see Barnsdall Park. Then we took the Red Line to Hollywood & Highland so we could check out "downtown" Hollywood (the touristy part). We met up with my friend Angela and her friend (and fellow Trojan) Preet. Angela is about to leave for Surabaya, Indonesia for two years to begin her first assignment in the U.S. Foreign Service, so it was good to see her. From Hollywood, we took a bus to Farmers Market and The Grove. We then took the bus back to Hollywood to see "War of the Worlds" at the Mann Grauman's Chinese Theatre. We took the Red Line back home after the show.

Yesterday we took the Red Line to Downtown and transferred to the Blue Line in order to travel to Watts so we could see the Watts Towers. Afterwards, we spent time walking around USC and the Exposition Park Rose Garden. A short bus ride took us from there to Downtown, where we enjoyed the views at the rotating bar atop the Bonaventure Hotel, then walked around to see the Central Library, Pershing Square, Broadway, the Old Bank District, City Hall, The Plaza, and Olvera Street. We ended the tour with a fine meal at Phillippe, then headed over to Union Station to catch the Red Line back home.

I am proud to say we did all these things without getting inside a car, though some might argue this made the vacation a little less "authentic" for my out-of-town guests. L.A. is still a city meant for automobiles, not pedestrians and/or transit riders.

Angela, Preet, and I discuss our love for public service - in case I get any snarky comments: 1) Yes, I am wearing back shoes with white socks, 2) I know this is a major fashion faux pas, and 3) I do not care (photo credit: G.D. Thurman)
