Hello Again
I want you to know that I am alive and doing well in sunny Southern California. The P.U. faithful continue to check in every once in awhile to see if anything new has been posted, and I appreciate the interest and support. I have no intention of abandoning this blog.
That being said, my last post on October 16, 2007 contained an itinerary of my autumn vacation down the East Coast, with the implication that commentary and photographs would be forthcoming. I acknowledge that I have not followed through but would like to point your attention to the following sets on Flickr:
Boston: Day One (October 20, 2007) -- 72 photos
Boston: Days Two and Three (October 21-22, 2007) -- 82 photos
The Big Dig (subset of above, October 20-21, 2007) -- 14 photos
NYC 2007 (October 22-24, 2007) -- 46 photos
Brooklyn Bridge (subset of above, October 23, 2007) -- 19 photos
Raleigh (October 27, 2007) -- 19 photos
Myrtle Beach (October 27, 2007) -- 5 photos
Still to Come: Photos from Charleston, Savannah, Atlanta, Walt Disney World, and Miami
Without delving into the litany of excuses I could make for not blogging, suffice it to say I hope to write more soon.

Welcome Back
I second that.
BTW--Mitch, Hi, first time to DIRECTLY make a comment with you online, but excellent commenting on the various Soiuthern Calif. centers; we've both seperately posted on "Mall Hall of Fame"--of the three (us two and the "Curator") I am the only Southern California born and raised of us three, IIRC.
I posted many comments there...enjoyed the Lakewood, Crenshaw (THERE's s a gang infested area with a HISTORIC, SIXTY year old center there!-with its own linear ORIGINAL style:-)
photographs, many of these rare (though the Lakewood appears on YesterdayLa.com.Excellent site as well!)
Love that May Co. and Broadway 1946archectecture in the Broadway Crenshaw plaza..).
One other thing..
I enjoyed the "May Cc./Broadway wars" comment with you and the Mall Hall Curator in the Whittier Quad entry (I hail from there..) in a .pdf file from another site, a review of someone's "From downtown to shopping" or whatever, some 1998 book, it appears (despite my belief initially that May Co. with their international status and their senority*, started it at least) that THE BROADWAY was responsible for the feud, what with them being Southern California's own..and here comes May Co. withb their stores. Burt it seems mutual more or less..
BTW Many Southern Calif. malls had both..as you mentioned in one of the MALL HALL OF FAME entries, from the very beginning (not to mention those that had May Company or the Broadway exclusively originally then later had the rival!).
For the general public, four of the originally May Co./Broadway coanchored (not counting the one then the other cases above or either May Co. or The Broadway being sharing space with The Broadway's sisters like Bullocks!) were:
Crenshaw Shopping Center (1947) **
Topanga Plaza (1964)
Montclair Plaza (1969)
Brea Mall (1977)
Mitch G. himself's mentioned others in the MALL HALL OF FAME: BLOGGER: POST A COMMENT: WHITTIER QUAD section, one of those..don't know if he's posted there. and that May Co. that which used to be in the Quad was similiar to the ones Mr.G mentioned, Buena Park, Westwood Village, The South Coast Plaza, PLUS Arcadia and The Topanga Plaza!
*The May Co/Broadway wars, as based on senority/other status:
The May Co. was established in 1877
and The Broadway was established in 1896. Seems, again, like the latter started the fed as May Co., though older, seemed the interloper due to its post-Broadway store and post May Co.opneing 1923 debut in Los Angeles in the Hamburger's store (boy now I am hungry!)
**Crenshaw May Co. was outparceled across the street from The Broadway, in fact like the WHittier Quad and Arcadia one it's hard to REALLY call it a "ANCHOR" there.."The Broadway" would have preferred it that way!
I'm a little behind on getting here, but it's too bad that I didn't know in advance that you were going to be coming to Boston. My husband is actually an engineer on the Big Dig and has worked on the project since 2000, and he frequently gives rather extensive tours of the project to out of town visitors (both personally and professionally), and given your interest in the subject and prominence in the planning community, he probably would've been happy to show you some behind the scenes bits!
I've actually moved to CA now (as you probably already know) and he is following soon, as the project is winding down there and he's going to be going to grad school at Berkeley for transportation planning and engineering.
