Broadway Department Stores
The Broadway department store chain was one of Southern California's most venerable retail firms, its origins dating back to the 1890's and its name derived from the main shopping street in Los Angeles. The Broadway embarked on a major expansion program after World War II that led to the construction of dozens of nearly identical buildings across Southern California and in Nevada and Arizona. Broadway Stores was acquired by Federated Department Stores in 1996 and was subsequently merged into the Macy's chain. Most of Broadway's stores remain today and are operated by Macy's, although many are occupied by Bloomingdale's, Sears, Wal-Mart, and others. The top photo below shows a Broadway built in the late 1960's with its original signs and colors. The other photo shows one of the more creative re-uses of a Broadway store by the IKEA Furniture chain.
